Canadian Shorinjiryu Kudaka Karate-Do Federation
Hanshi Bob Cussler
Hanshi Cussler worked hard to distinguish himself and was granted the rank of first kyu brown in the fall of 1989. Shortly after that Hanshi Doug Roberts, Hanshi Brian Aarons and a number of senior black belts formed the Shorinjiryu Kudaka Karate-do Federation. In the fall of 1990 he was invited to participate in the new federation’s first Yudansha test and received his black belt. His instructor had rigorously prepared him for this test because he knew that shortly after Sensei Cussler received his black belt he would need to be ready to take over the club. Shihan McBride, as he is now called, was leaving to attend a Medical school in the US. Sensei Cussler will always be grateful to him for this opportunity.
Sensei Cussler committed himself to maintain and run a dojo, an honour not usually given to a Shodan. He thanks his first instructor Shihan Wolf Boggs, Hanshi Doug Roberts, and Hanshi Rick Black for helping him during this challenging time. With their help and his hard work he managed to maintain and at times increase the club’s size. Under his instruction, The Kingston Kobura Karate Club has produced numerous excellent black belts, some of whom now run their own dojos.
Hanshi Cussler feels lucky to have had the opportunity to have trained under and with the excellent martial artists mentioned in this bio, and he thanks his senior students Shihan Jean-Eric Gibeau (6th Dan), Renshi Kristine Miller (5th Dan) , and Renshi James Taylor (5th Dan) for their continued loyalty and hard work in the development of Shorinjiryu Kudaka Karate-do.
